Summer Heat III, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007
Rode down to SC with Moose in a rental car (taking no chances this time). We agreed to meet at the mall in Statesville at 8am. At 8:10 I called him and said, "Where are you?" and he said, "At the mall." I said, "Where at the mall? I'm parked in front of Belk." And he said, "Me, too." We were twenty feet away from each other with one car parked between us in an otherwise empty lot. So started the day. Here's the meet from my point of view:
Mark Ferris (Chainman) made LOTS of multi-ply lifters look downright weak in only his single ply gear. Mark had a great day, taking a first and Best Lifter for the AAPF division. He's a thinker (see below for more on this) so you could tell he was in control all day. Great lifting, Mark!
Buddy Nichols was already in Lifter's Zen by the time they held the (excruciatingly long and tedious) rules meeting, and he never left it all day. He came back after a fluke miss at 694 to get three whites on his 702 squat. Wow. If he and Mark could bottle and sell that kind of mental fortitude they'd make a fortune at every meet. I'd look over at Buddy, and he'd have a faint smile on his face, arms folded on his chest. Cool. Nice win and another Best Lifter for NC.
Greg Crook is so modest and unselfish that we tend to forget that he nurses a nagging back injury. We sure as hell forgot about it when he squatted 821 (at 198)! He was equally as strong on the bench (always a plus for us full-power types) with a big 548 on his third. But by the time the deads were loaded he had to concede (a little) to the pain. But it was another win and yet another Best Lifter for north of the border. Excellent, Greg!
Steve Maxson had the same day Saturday that I had in Daytona in June, except he GOT HIS OPENER on the squat and didn't have to suffer through the same weight three freakin times to stay alive. He was the victim of some of the worst loading confusion I have ever seen. As a card carrying National APF Judge, I felt compelled to get in the head judge's face over the cluster playing out on the platform. The judge was just as pissed as the rest of us, and gave a five minute break. (Lifters were called to the platform out of order and the bar weight was going up AND DOWN, and the mono never seemed to be set at the right rack height). Steve ended up being wrapped, unwrapped, WRAPPED again and then told to wait. He never lost it, though, and held on all day to take a WIN and earn a huge amount of admiration from all of us there. Steve, you did great!
Brandon Sneed didn't have the day he wanted, but he's a strong man and when he finds steady training partners and a little more depth, he'll be back to post some big numbers.
One the heartbreaks of my day was Derek Wilcox. Like Greg Crook and myself, dropping that weight is no easy task. There's not much we can't do without cause there's not much fluff to begin with. (OK, I have more fluff than them, but it's similar, sort of.) Thanks to his daily dose of video we all know what D is capable of, and that is A LOT. I don't know for sure how many pounds he had to shed, but I could tell from the hollow eyes I saw in the warm up area that morning that they did not go back on too well. Been there, done that. Derek's going to leave his mark on this sport. Next time.
Team Torture had many great lifters in this meet. Jonathon was busy ALL day. It was great to see Will make the 500+ pull. He had a good meet.
My heart goes out to Kyle Robertson who was injured during the deadlifts. Kyle is a strong and charismatic lifter, and a good leader here in NC. Kyle, come back soon.
It was a long day, almost as long as this rambling post. I leave you with one more little glimpse of the day (Moose, you had to see this one coming): Riding back Saturday night Moose and I were talking about the meet and the people. He was about to say something about one of the lifters and he says, "Did you see that bald guy today. . . ?" Um, yeah.
Congratulations to everyone who competed. Thanks for letting me be part of your day.
