Here’s an idea that I got from Jon Grove, owner of North Georgia Barbell that I though was very simple and just a great little routine. The idea is to pick a bar weight that you wish to squat and work up to that weight with bar weight and chains so that the you have the goal weight at the top of the lift. As the weeks go by trade the chain weight little by little for bar weight and before you know it you’ll be doing the weight you were aiming for.
A few things to keep in mind, I wouldn’t attempt this routine unless you have at least 100lbs worth of chain. Also start out wearing whatever equipment you plan on using while performing the goal weight. This is my 2 cents on how to go about this routine. I don’t feel like you could do this every week because your body will accommodate to this after about 3 weeks in a row and your progress would stall, so I would suggest doing this every 3rd or 4th week. Make this day your full equipment day. The weeks in between do GM’s and pull and all you’re other normal assistance work and I think it would work great for you that way.
This is a great way to get used to feeling the weight on your back so that you become accustomed to it and you’ll develop no fear of this weight either because you’ll have had it on your back countless times before the meet. Give it a shot sometime and good luck!
