Everyone has their own opinion on this one so here's mine. For speed work I keep mine the same always. If I want to change things up I use a different bar (safety squat bar is all we have right now), bands, chains, straight weight etc.
Now on M/E days this is where I think your lifting equipment/federation comes into play. If your federation only allows single ply equipment then your not going to get the carryover that you would out of double ply, sad but true. That being said for single ply lifters you would want to stay at just below parallel the majority of the time because your biggest concern is going to be getting out of the hole. This is exactly what I did when I started. I competed in AAU for a while and thats where I missed lifts, in the bottom.
APF lifters or aspiring APF lifters you guy's are a little different. With the double ply equipment thats out today if you can finish it the suit will get you out of the hole. Me and Jonathan Couick attended Mark Bartley's seminar and he told me there was no need for me to train below parallel, thats what the suit is for. I think theres alot of truth in that. It doesn't mean never go below parallel it means it doesn't have to be top priority. For now I've got to train at parallel because of my hip so we'll see in November how it works.
Everyone, regardless of what box height you choose PLEASE do some open squats with no box to depth once in a while. We all compete or want to, and theres nothing worse than bombing because you didn't make depth cause you never went there in training. What any particular judge thinks is depth is another issue all together and you never know that going in to a contest, they may call them high maybe not just be prepared either way thats your safest bet!!
