Power by Pavel: Are You Putting Brakes on Your Strength Gains? For some reason the question why can't one train all out all the time never dies. One more time, the answer: It was Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov - yes, the one who worked with dogs - who established that nerve cells cannot function in overdrive for an extended period of time. When they are pushed for too long they start experiencing inhibition and their capacity is reduced. It is a defense mechanism against nervous exhaustion. The Russian neuroscience term for 'inhibition' is a word that really drives the point home; the word is 'braking'. If you want to put brakes on your strength gains - train like every workout is a competition.
