TEN QUESTIONS BY BARRY WILLIAMS
INTERVEIW WITH POWERLIFTING LEGEAND, Dave Palumbo
BW - Dave, we get some drug free lifters on here as well as those who do use them. Supplement wise; what do you consider to be worth the money now for those who rely on over the counter stuff?
DP - The most valuable supplement that really gives you your money's worth is a high quality Whey Protein Isolate. It's the best bang for your buck! Additionally, every single lifter should take 2 fatty acid supplements-- Omega-3 Fish Oil pills (1000mg 3x per day) and Evening Primrose Oil Pills (1300mg 2x per da)
BW - Its a known fact that most of us don't eat nearly as much as we should to go along with the amount of time we spend in the gym. What are some simple guidelines you would suggest for calorie intake?
DP - I don't believe in calculating calories. Take in at least your bodyweight in protein (1g protein/lb), 1/2 your weight in good essential fats (1/2g/lb), and your weight in carbs (1g carbs/lb)
BW - This could take a minute but what’s your opinion on all the press that’s given to steroids these days? People seem to forget there’s a war going on right now as well as so much other shit that needs to be addressed.
DP - It's glamorous to talk about those "magical" steroids. More recently, GH seems to be the drug to talk about. In 5 years, the press will be talking about "TESTING FOR VIRAL VECTORS" to try to weed out the people who genetically have altered themselves using viruses that inhibit myostatin.
BW - Just how bad are steroids for the average person? (I don't think they are but I would like somebody else to give an educated answer for people to read)
DP - Anything is bad for you if you take too much! Likewise, nothing is quite as bad as it sounds if you use it responsibly.
BW - Maybe close to the last question but what’s the biggest myth concerning performance-enhancing drugs?
DP - They biggest myth is that steroids make your penis shrink. Testicles, maybe! Not your penis.
BW - The bodybuilding community talks about bulking or cutting drugs all the time. But how about strength drugs?
DP - There's no such thing as a cutting drug. All steroids build muscle; they don't burn fat. There ARE certain drugs that make you strong, however. These drug usually cause tremendous fluid retention within the muscle (they volumize the muscle) this, in turn, gives the muscle better leverage to contract against. Anadrol, Dianabol, testostosterone, and trenbolone come to mind
BW - Dave, you're one of the most respected men in the business. Where/who do you go for advice?
DP - At this point in my career, I go to the textbooks or journal articles. Once I fully educate myself in a particular area that I need more knowledge about, I am "wise" enough (from all the years of schooling and In the Trenches experience) that I can usually synthesize my own answers. Early in my career, I had a doctor/bodybuilder friend name Dr. Mike Kaufman who really helped to mold my thinking patterns with regard to performance-enhancing drugs and later; Dr Scott Connelly (inventor of Met-Rx) shaped my thinking in the supplement field. Today, MD publisher and former Twin Lab owner, Steve Blechman is a great person to talk "supplements" with.
BW - How important is taking an "off" cycle and how much time does you recommend?
DP - Everyone should take at OFF at least 8-10 weeks per year. And when I say "off", I mean off of everything-- no steroids, no GH, no Insulin!
BW - Ronnie Coleman could walk into any power lifting meet and compete with whoever may be there. Who else in bodybuilding has that ability?
DP - 2007 NPC USA Champ Ben White and IFBB Pro Johnny Jackson. Probably Chris Cormier, as well. He's ridiculously strong.
BW - Dave, if you died today (lets hope not), how would you want to be remembered?
DP - As a generous person who unselfishly shared his insights with the world.
BW - Now for some shameless self-promotion. Please tell anybody not familiar with you just who Dave Palumbo is.
DP - I'm just some crazy medical school dropout who almost turned pro more times than anyone else in the history of the sport. I'm currently the Editor-in-Chief of Musculardevelopment.com (www.musculardevelopment.com) and the owner of SPECIES nutrition (www.speciesnutrition.com)
BW - Give any links to yours and the magazines sites.
DP - My personal website is: www.davepalumbo.com and my online personal training course is www.smarttrainingonline.com
BW - Dave thanks again for the advice you've given me and for taking the time to do this for our members.
