TEN QUESTIONS BY BARRY WILLIAMS
INTERVEIW WITH 198er WORLD RECORD HOLDER: SHAWN FRANKL
The last two years I've made the trip to Sr. Nationals not knowing
what to expect or who would be there. Last year I met Jason Coker and now have what I consider a great friend in Texas. This year I didn't meet anyone as much as I learned a little something about another lifter. At the beginning of the day I heard Shawn Frankl would be shooting for a new world record bench @ 198. Well before most lifters hit the platform you may hear the most God forsaken music, language, or sound coming from them. But when I walked by Shawn; he's standing with a friend praying. Of all the things I saw that weekend, that moment stood out the most. We've had Shawn on here before, but with his busting 2400 and benching 760 all at 198 it's time to listen again.
BW - Shawn, with your deep Christian beliefs, how do you ignore some of
the stuff going on around you in the gym and at meets?
SF - I like to look at it as trying to be there for my friends and
teammates/coach instead of ignoring them. I never judge anybody cause
God knows I'm not perfect. I think if we all could meet Jesus he would be the type to care about anybody and everybody despite there past or whatever they may be going through.
BW - Going 2400 at 198 was/is crazy. How much did you have left in the
tank?
SF - I would honestly like to total 2500 at 198. I know I can squat over a 1000 and bench 800 and pull around 750 so its just time before it happens. I didn’t hit the numbers I wanted to this meet but I also didn’t want to get greedy. One step at a time. Especially because I don’t have to cut much weight.
BW - You've crossed a line now by hittin "Bench only" numbers in a full
meet. Would you think about changing up your training in order to shoot for an 800?
SF - I would but it just seems like there’s always a full power meet
coming up and I never have a long enough time to train bench only. But I must say I just love full power.
BW - Who's the best bencher in the sport now? Full power?
SF - There is a couple that come to mind. One being my teammate Brad heck benching 705 @181.Also Rob luyando 903 @ 242 and at 220 is a freak. And of course Ryan Kennelly who is amazing 1036 and strong as an ox. Full power I would have to say Scott yard is a great bencher along with Jason Coker and I would like to think I would be as well.
BW - Describe your training schedule your using now.
SF - Right now were Squatting on Sat and dead lifting on wed and benching on Mon. We always do those 3 lifts every week. Sometimes we'll go heavy on squat and in that week we'll go lighter on the deads and the week after it will be the opposite. We train bands on Thurs for lockout work on the bench but we do those core movements every week.
BW - Shawn, where does power lifting fall on your list of priorities in
life?
SF - On my list of priorities God comes first then my wife Missy and son Austin and daughter to be Halliey and family. Then my job. Finally
Powerlifting. There are allot of times my family sacrifices because I'm
training but they are supportive and I thank them for that. I don’t know how my wife puts up with me sometimes.
BW - Some people hang around the sport they love way past their prime.
How long would you like to continue lifting and what's your next goal to hit?
SF - I don’t have any set time of how long I'll be power lifting but I would like to total 2500 @ 198.
BW - We have a problem here in NC with lifters being divided (Way to
much) over being tested, drug free, single ply, you name it. Nobody can just say "Good lift" and mean it. What’s your take on it?
SF - I think its joke that everywhere and always will be but as for me I can only do what I can do and I want to be positive about any type of
power lifting cause I love the sport so it doesn’t matter to me where or how people lift I just love power lifting.
BW - The point was made a few weeks ago that MAYBE, some of the pitchers throwing to Barry Bonds were juiced and on a level playing field. He just seems to catch all the heat because of who he is. Do you think PROFESSIONAL sports should be any different from college? After all, people are paying to see home runs hit, touch downs scored.
SF - I guess that’s what I like about the federations I choose to compete in is that we are all on a level playing field.
BW - Not so much a question here. Give a little insight on the Shawn
Frankl that people don't see in a gym or a meet.
SF - I guess with me its more like 'what you see is what you get" I try
to be the same wherever I am. People can tell a phony and I can’t stand
that myself.
BW - Shawn thanks again for taking the time to do this. As always, please take a minute or two and thank anybody you'd like to mention.
SF - I would like to thank God for the opportunities and gifts he's given me. Also I'd like to thank my family for the support. My coach Rick Hussey and all my training partners at B.I.G. Also Inzer Advanced design for the sponsorship and great gear. Also Thompson Electric for the sponsorship and support. Thanks.
