We'll see, Derek! 6-8 Meet Opener, Bench Warm-Up Bar x 3 x 2 95 x 2 x 1 135 x 1 x 1 155 x 1 x 1 Shirt On, and pre-lift neural facilitation from coach S. 185 x 1 x 1, 2-board 225 x 1 x 1, 2-board (Surprise hit of home-brew nose tork , warn me before you do that!! But it DOES help!) 225 x 1 x 1 to chest Many thanks to the wonderful group we had at Gym 365 tonight: LaVan, Brandon, Steve, Chip (WOW--strong), Barry, Rodney and the glue that holds us together, Mr. Smith. Everyone is getting stronger. I have to convey a special thanks to Barry, Rodney and Joey for their patience and persistence in coaching me on the bench. I didn't have any PRs tonight in weight, but it was a PR in confidence. That, my fellow lifters, is worth more going into this meet than any number on paper. I could not do this without you all. Thanks.

Greg and Marty, thanks. I carried your well wishes to the platform. As you will see, Greg also sent me a few of those extra bench PR pounds he was hoarding!!
First off, many thanks to my fellow NC APF lifters accompanying me on this trip. Barry and I traveled down together overnight on Wednesday, hitting the sunny shores of Daytona Beach about 9am Thursday. At the meet hotel we ran into John P and Kyle R and spent most of the day hanging around with them. Kyle had some weight to drop so we were off to the YMCA (the only sauna around, go figure). Mr. Smith, his lovely daughter Katelyn, Rodney, his wife Wendy and daughter Brooke arrived just after 4pm. When all the bench onlys were weighed in it was time to get some rest, as I had been up for about 30 hours!!
The events on Friday did not kick off until 2pm. The warm up room was large and they had two benches, but NO BOARDS. Good thing both Joey and Kyle remembered to bring some. Needless to say they were VERY POPULAR during warm-ups. Congratulations to Barry on his win, for listening to two very smart guys (Joey and Rodney) on his opener, and keeping his composure lifting against Shawn Frankl.
Saturday morning, 9am, first day of full-power and it was women and lightweight men. We had two monolifts, but unless you were between 4'9" and 5'1", one of them did you no good. It would NOT raise up any higher. I grabbed the wonderful Jo Jordan to call depth, and it was on. So here it is: Squat 1: 192.5K (424) low enough but called for double-dipping (They called bar loaded on my second, and it was loaded, but it was also set at waist height, nowhere near the 15-in I needed. When they went to raise it, it dropped ALL THE WAY DOWN, so I waited, and waited, for them to raise it back up. Judges were yelling for them to hurry and I'm sure my language was none too polite or lady-like.) Squat 2: 192.5K (424) called for depth (uh-oh) OK. Having a little trouble getting down today. Went out for my third attempt with kneewraps on just for decoration! I'm surprised they didn't end up around my ankles. Squat 3: 192.5K (424) Good lift, meet PR (whew!) My thanks many times over to Jo. Poor guy had to work WAY too hard on this.
Bench 1: 102.5K (225) Good lift Bench 2: 107.5K (237) Called for downward motion on left side after press command (fair call) Bench 3: 107.5K (237) Good lift, meet PR First, Rodney had the shirt PERFECT on every lift. Barry made sure my feet were set right. And Mr. Smith coached every second of the bench for me. I was just along for the ride, didn't have to think for a second. Sweet.
Deadlift 1: 220K (484) Good lift and a WPC Masters 1 World Record Then I got greedy. Deadlift 2: 237.5K (523) Got it to mid-shin and no further. Head judge made me put it down. Guess he didn't want to get beaned by my eyeballs. Deadlift 3: 237.5K (523) Never broke it loose.
Well, there's nothing like going 4/9 at your first national meet. Not my best work, mind you, but gives me lots of room for improvement!!!
I finally got to meet Jo and Mike S. (thanks for the kind words, Breaker), so that was a treat. Also met Jason Coker and Johnny May, two very crazy, but sweet, guys. But the day never would have happened at all if it weren't for these three: Barry, Rodney and Joey. The events of the past few weeks, disruptions in training, loss of some of my support, coupled with extreme fatigue and disappointment really took its toll on me, and I was ready to pack it in. These great guys came to my rescue, propped me back up, and stood by my side. I can't thank them enough. That medal doesn't belong to me, it belongs to US.
Thanks to all of you for the kind words of support here, the text messages, the ongoing encouragement. Stay united.

Thanks, Marty. I guess all PL'ers have tendencies toward being insane machines! Pat Mr. Smith on the back for his coaching, too. He and Rodney were indispensible. Thanks, Stacy. Careful with those hundreds . . . Friday Night 6/22/07 at Gym 365 . . . and where is everybody??? Joey, Greg and Chip made the trip down. Thanks guys!! I had planned to do some rack lock-outs, but Mr. Smith, coach, made me lift with the big boys. So here it is: Raw Bench Warm-Up Bar x 5 x 1 95 x 5 x 1 115 x 5 x 1 135 x 5 x 1 145 x 5 x 1 155 x 5 x 1 165 x 5 x 1 PR 205 x 2 x 1 2-Board 225 x 2 x 1 2-Board PR 245 x 1 x 1 PR ;D Well, glad I listened to the coach! Cambered Bar Pressdowns - Green Band Doubled 10 x 3 8 x 1 Rope Pressdowns 80 x 10 x 3 Fun night. Greg was hot on the bench!! It's encouraging to see such an accomplished lifter still making progress week-to-week! Chip was awesome, as usual. If you've never lifted with him, do. He can go from smiling, all-American guy standing around and chatting to chill-bump raising, screaming maniac pre-lift in 6.2 seconds. It's really a Jekyll and Hyde kinda thing. But in a fun way. Mr. Smith proved himself raw benching AND doing heavy shrugs (he was the only one lifting off for Greg's 500+ and Chips 700+ attempts!). And proved himself coaching, too! Thanks for being there, guys, and giving all the support, too.
